Originally settled in 1641 as part of Stamford, the area became Middlesex Parish in 1737. In 1820, residents petitioned the state legislature to establish Darien as a separate town. Today the city covers 12.9 square miles with an estimated 20,000 residents. Prices for single-family homes start in the low $600,000s for older model houses located inland. More than 50% of Darien homes for sale are $800,000 or above. The top of the real estate market features $10 million estate homes with ocean or river views and acreage. There is a small supply of condominiums, all located near the ocean. Prices start at $600,000 for a one-bed, one-bath condominium.
